Hellboy, redrawn, emptied, cut out

[all the images can be clicked upon for larger versions]

This is a page from Hellboy, the Third Wish, drawn by Mike Mignola, with colors by Dave Stewart (p.52 in the French Delcourt edition; the colors are a bit off). It has all the elements of a climactic Hellboy page : empty spaces, vast black areas, a wonderful composition, an intriguing statue and of course, Hellboy himself crashing down to a dark space peopled with monsters. I was so struck by its effectiveness that I set out to see how it worked by tinkering with it and pushing it into alternative directions.

The first step was to redraw it entirely, then to recolor the inked page. This was of course done without measurement, light table or tracing paper, as the goal was to learn the picture. Tellingly, the empty spaces are less empty than in the original, and the statue is far less impressive. It takes a conscious effort to go as far as Mignola went. I was nevertheless very satisfied with the result.

Then, the idea was then to use this appropriated page in order to explore two of Mignola's more striking skills:  his mastery of empty spaces and his willingness to turn his images into near abstractions.

This still works as a narrative sequence in context, although it displaces the climax into the future, replacing it with an element of suspense and possibly horror in the last panel.

Abstraction.

Then I wanted to tackle a different challenge and work on composition witouth the support of Mignola's lines and Stewart's colours. Collage was the chosen solution.

The images were cut, their sizes altered, but none of them were stretched or deformed, which would have made things far less challenging. I also resisted adding shadows.
